While sorting through some old books, I began leafing through the yellowed pages that had taught us a new language and later, reminded us of the old one. Word after word brought memories of my father, his relationships, so many aspects of who he was, things that I miss... Muddling through this unfamiliar process twenty-two years after losing him, this became a piece that commemorates my father, space technologist come welder, Albertus Vermeer. Esther Vermeer is a multi-platform artist, author and co-designer of 3D Folded Blocks (2010). Born in the Netherlands, she grew up in Southern Ontario, moving to Winnipeg in 1992, and then into central Manitoba in 2000. "My art is typically representational realism, so this process of decision-making by layer felt similar to designing quilts, with the added dimension of following someone else's design rules, albeit stretched rather liberally."
