This was a real challenge to "think outside of the box" for me! As I usually do landscapes I was somewhat intimidated by a request to do an abstract. However, after some thought (for the better part of a year) I was inspired by several events in my life to create this painting. First, I like to paint scenes depicting the boreal forest in and around my home town of Flin Flon in northern Manitoba. Second my wife Raye and I like to spend our winters on Vancouver Island. On a recent visit to the Island I was quite intrigued by the native masks and their cultural history at a visit to the museum in Victoria. And last but not least as we travel from our summer and winter homes we enjoy a visit to a B&B in Spiritwood in northern Saskatchewan. Hence, I considered all of this in the creation of my first attempt at an abstract - "Spirit Out of the Woods". As it is often said "You now know the rest of the story".
