IF belongs in a body of work, Microscopic Moon Tales, which began with a visit to the Marine Discovery Centre in Sidney, British Columbia. The microscopes revealed perfectly round, vibrantly coloured worlds, sheathed in black. The detailed, lively glimpses of sea life were in sharp contrast to what was visible to the naked eye. Just as drops of water on a microscope slide are transformed into biospheres, the original idea of the printed images (interpreting the microscope views) evolved into moons and planets. The bright colours appeared alien, and the circular shapes suggested celestial objects, especially the symbolic representation of the moon. The series, Microscopic Moon Tales deals with ideas of visibility/invisibility, microcosms/macrocosms, and the vital relationship of the particle to the whole. In particular, the art book, If, invites us to consider our relationship to the natural world, and our place in it. The recurring image of a moon allows us to reflect on the concept of time, and the possibilities in life. Terry Vatrt photographs the world around her, is a printmaker, and creates original art books. The photos inform the printmaking, and the prints are fodder for the books. Her prints have been shown internationally, as well as across Canada. Terry lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
