Images, ideas, and musings synthesized and coalesced between Lori and I on a shared Google Drive. Without NorVA bringing Dean Bauch’s encaustic show and workshop to Flin Flon in 2014, the practical side of this piece would not have involved Photomatix and Photoshop or the use of mounted photographic paper, essential for capturing the creative elements. These began with a swirl of pot-bound roots which sparked the image of Lori’s wild hair and her moniker ‘hurricane child’. Her whirlwind life was braided with secret sadnesses before she got quit of drugs and alcohol. Recovery unmasked wells of healing, growth and compassion, qualities this portrait celebrates. Lori: dancer, singing-songmaker, gypsy maverick, healer, at age 60 rebirthed herself as a saucy wage-earner. The launch of our project coincided with this transformation which, at times, seemed impossible. But she succeeded in infiltrating a California school district and has begun a career as a shamanic social worker. Sarah uses her life in the boreal forest beside Amisk Lake and the years leading up to it in Africa, as sources for analogy and metaphor which are intrinsic to her work in encaustic, batik and acrylic.
