This work gives an admiring nod to American artist Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) whose enigmatic boxed assemblages fascinate me. Inspired by him I put together, inside a re-purposed container, bits and pieces which I found around home and in thrift shops. I gradually settled on my title, Creative Block, as I gathered possible supplies and considered how to solve my assigned artistic problem. The title initially suggested frustration, emptiness, and anxiety. I then experimented with arranging my collectibles in ways which might expand on those ideas by, for example, making parts look static, monotonous, imprisoned, murky, or even lifeless. It was interesting to see how common objects and materials, juxtaposed in different ways, could create a variety of surprising associations about "creative block". When making art in general, my focus is to fuse structure, media, imagery, and often words so that, collectively, they contribute to a work's meanings. Ann is primarily a book artist. Since keeping illustrated notebooks and journals at university, she has moved on to exploring the potential of the artist's book as a way of expressing ideas. Her work as been exhibited across Canada and elsewhere and has appeared in a number of publications. Contact Information [email protected] |
