The challenge to create something based on a historic example ultimately defined this work. Haven’t spices been used since ancient times? Don’t cinnamon and sentiment belong together, often bringing about a sense of nostalgia? Surely, spices would continue to be used in the future. Why not paint with spices? The cinnamon sticks conjured up a vision of a footbridge tapering off towards a far embankment. If outside sources of bark were used to redraw the rock and land formations, and reeds used to give a realistic dimension to the trees, the effect would be loud. If warm colours and earth tones were used for the under painting of the sky and ravine and path, it would be in keeping with the monochromatic shades of cinnamon. The pepper, nutmeg and Creole pathway leads the eye to follow the cinnamon bridge crossing the chili, Italian and anise ravine. On the near side, a bay leaf and peppercorn plant and rose hip and clove flowers grow at the base of trees covered with crushed red pepper bark; their branches dipped in dill in a pretense of pines. Parsley, celery seed, and mint leaves give the effect of shrubs and mosses. Lemon herb seasoning creates the illusion of crumbled rock and debris. Cross the cinnamon bridge to the words ‘follow your dreams’ - written by another, printed on neutral paper, and set into an abstract hickory, ginger and paprika sky.
