I live in Winnipeg and have been painting since 1991. I work mainly in Acrylics but have worked in Mixed media on occasion. This project was thought provoking and challenging. The theme, The Grandpa Box, was decided when I was walking at a men’s retreat and had just become a Grandfather for a second time. As time passed, different processes to incorporate the guidelines assigned to me were formed, then rejected, until the piece began to take its present form. Apart from the single image in black and white (contrast), the allegory is the grandfather is also a grandchild. I am dressed in my Sunday best and sitting on my Grandmother’s dresser stool when this picture was taken in our living room. The picture collage is composed from strips of pictures of my two granddaughters which are formed into a collage image of their grandpa as a boy. The poppy is a symbol of peace, sleep, death and war and represents their great grandfather who was a veteran of WWII and died before he experienced grand-parenthood. |
