Finding skeletal remains behind wood sheds and abandoned cars or rusty farm implements ditched in the wild undergrowth along the woods was not uncommon when growing up on a dairy farm. I recall being whipped by branches, stepping on nails, shattered glass, insects, sharp metal and barbed wire with the occasional need for some medical attention. The rodents, murky waters and spine chilling slithers in the tall grass did not suppress my curiosity for observing decay and corrosion over time. In this work I use a method called “Cold Water Maceration” to rot and remove flesh from some of the bones. I soak them in frequently changed water and then expose them to the sun. It took most of last summer to complete this process. This work assembles elements of my childhood experience alongside my life-long curiosity with the natural elements. Annette Henderson is a multi-media collage artist. Born and raised in St. Claude, Manitoba, she now lives outside of Rathwell, Manitoba and continues her joy of treasure hunting which is integral to her art practice.
