After agreeing to participate in this interesting project and receiving my random list of guidelines, my first thought was of a haiku I had written the previous summer. I was floating on my back in a lake, eyes closed to the hot sun and listening to the breathing in my head. As with most haiku, it is a very personal yet lyrical observation of an ordinary, precise moment in time. The suminagashi marbled paper evokes a mysterious, watery world over which floats a silk thread and many reflective points of light. This is all supported by the detail of a painting of expressive line and layered colour by Aija Svenne. Together, they combine to create an instinctive yet thoughtful response to a perfect moment. Nicole Coulson has played in art for many years. With a background in photography, calligraphy and bookbinding, she is interested in exploring her natural world with an eye for detail, form, line and texture. A native of St. Boniface, MB, Canada, Nicole has worked in visual arts administration since 1992. Her work has shown in group exhibitions at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain, La Maison des artistes, the Mennonite Heritage Gallery and the University of Manitoba Archives as well as in several books and publications. Her haiku are published in “sur la même écorce”, compiled by Bertrand Nayet for les Éditions David, Ottawa. Contact Information [email protected] |
