The complexities of inter-species relationships are a recurring theme in all of my work because I question the role our species plays in the animal hierarchy and because I wish to share an urgent need to be mindful of each other and the creatures with which we coexist. Prairie Dogs are highly social individuals, native to the grasslands of North America. They build and live in towns; their homes have defined nurseries, sleeping quarters, and toilets. They spend a lot of time building and rebuilding. They communicate and live in family groups where members greet each other with kisses… Sound familiar? The following statement, translated from Cynomys Bark to English, was declared in Congress on July 3, 1776: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Prairie Dogs are created equal that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Yet, they exist in only a small fraction of their former numbers and their range has shrunk to perhaps five percent of their historic spread…Just saying.
