My works always have many shape shifting moments from an idea to a finished artwork. So original collages may have been “monochromatic”(the photocopies would have been), but then a paint brush and colour find their way into the work. This is at the end of my She’s come undone series where I have looked at the unusual circumstances of women and childbirth. Yellow police tape and a U-haul storage unit with the discovery, however gruesome, of 6 babies in states of decay. And a woman and storyline that unfolds. The work has become so involved but will in pieces wrap around an old phonograph when I re-do it in bead-work. I lifted photographs of ravens from Wendy Davis photography Facebook page, looked for images of hands and mouths and babies and did photograph of myself in similar poses. But simply collaged photocopies needed more, so I have drawn the images onto poster paper and created watercolour pieces to highlight areas(that will likely get beaded at some later date) In this work I started with lyrics from songs like Counting Crows Murder of One and a paragraph from Margaret Atwood Eating the birds. I like the novel Mrs. Blood by Audrey Thomas. The chosen songs/prose were about birds, boxes, eating or consuming and secrets. I wanted a kind of womb and tomb ouroboros. The top figure is Tanya Tagaq, artist contemporary throat singer. In throat singing, the sound is not carried out by simply breathing out but also from breathing in. I didn’t want the work to make a statement about “eating our children” but ask many questions.
