I have walked on the Great Wall of China and snorkeled in the grand cenotes of Mexico. I have wept in the gardens of Van Gogh in Arles, France and danced to Spanish guitars in Ronda, Spain. As I have traveled and painted around the world, each place and culture influences my heart. Look closely and there are snippets and mementos of these places collaged onto the painting, “My Grandmother’s Box”. The painting is made up of 100 year old paper clippings that my Grandmother meticulously cut out and secreted away in this hand sewn box. These clippings are mounted with collage pieces from old paintings and photographs from my life. This highly colourful and abstract piece has incorporated watercolour and acrylic techniques which are very familiar to me. The layout is historic in nature as it is my history shown as a river flowing from my grandmother’s box with images of my humble beginnings as an artist, through to my children and now grandchildren. This has been an interesting challenge as I have had to push myself in directions I haven’t explored before. Combining words and images to tell a story of my life has forced me to evaluate and prioritize the events of my 60 years. What an incredible journey!
