I created the clay box so that when opened, it would form two ‘cradles‘ (cradle: a place where something originates or is nurtured during its early life). The outer surface is smooth and shiny, the edge surface is rough in texture -- hence the idea of contrasts -- and the fact that outward appearance can be very different from inner reality. The cradle interior is blanketed with torn paper (to tear: to remove reluctantly), with dictionary definitions, and with a photograph that was reprinted using a photocopier. The small child, her nurse, and the teddy bear -- who were brought together by an epidemic -- are figures interacting within the broad definition of isolation: to place in a ward, as of a hospital or prison. What an interesting challenge this project was. It incubated for a long time before I was able to find a way to bring all of the assigned parameters together. I first went through those usual creative barriers that always threaten to shipwreck me -- the two ‘biggies’ being uncertainty and procrastination. Then, when I finally embraced the challenge -- stepping out of my own way and just letting my feelings and thoughts flow, an idea came to mind. Once I had the idea, it was fun to take the parameters I was given and work them into a unified whole. The end product made me appreciate how fluid creativity is -- working its way around and through all challenges. My biggest discovery was that artistic medium is only a small tool empowering a much bigger force. Never satisfied with following the status quo, I am a photographer who likes to explore the many and varied possibilities for using photography -- from traditional photos to encaustic photography -- from printing on a variety of materials to the wide range of possibilities available using digital editing. I like the story-telling aspect of photographs and always strive for emotional impact. Contact Information [email protected] |
