Criteria
Technique: digital Layout: random or unplanned Text: stream of consciousness, free write, or rant Paper: transparent, translucent Colour: muted or pastel Image: collaborate with another artist Adjectives: ordinary or mundane; surreal; layered; strange or exotic; non-sequential Statement/Bio
Just make a work based on my own interpretation of some simple criteria. No rules. No one will be checking! And besides, I helped cook up this crazy idea. What could be simpler? Right? NOT! There was no shortage of ideas. It was going to be a book of some sort. I had the most fun with the adjective “surreal”. I decided to fill the pages of my book with automatic drawing. The surrealists developed automatic drawing as a means of expressing the subconscious. The hand is allowed to move randomly across the paper. In applying chance and accident to mark-making, drawing is said to be largely freed of control. Now to find a collaborator. Richard Dyck provided me with a list of 11 words which I planned to use in my stream of consciousness/free write rant! Anyone that knows Richard would agree that this could be a dangerous proposition. Oh well, this project is about risk taking and pushing boundaries. It was at this point I thought it wise to refer back to the criteria I had been given. Oops! I was to collaborate with another artist on the image! A couple of images to illustrate the free rant and I was all set. Might as well stick to the Surrealist theme. As Salvador Dali said, “What is important is to spread confusion, not eliminate it.” I suppose I am a mixed media artist although I would rather be open to all possibilities. I am a painter in watercolour and coloured pencil; a printmaker; a book artist; and, to a lesser extent, a fibre artist and photographer. I have used acrylic paints and mediums and also oil paints though not usually for their intended purpose! Contact Information [email protected] http://www.paulineabraun.com |
