Letting Go is a painting that developed after reading the description of words that I was given to work with. I felt it was important for me to work through my past and let go of the shame and humiliation that a survivor of abuse hangs onto. We all at times feel fractured and not completely whole, thus the four canvas unite to make one. Using a very limited palette I used fast brush strokes to create the background and in doing so also created the shape of the face. This is me yet it isn’t me, this is who I was and also who I am. The words are from the actual police report that resulted in the conviction and incarceration of my abuser. Our past shapes who we are today but it doesn’t define who we become. Creating something unique and beautiful fills a need within and also allows me to express raw emotions, leaving a part of me in each painting. We all see and feel things differently and being able to share the process and end result with others pushes me to reach beyond what is comfortable and grow creatively.
